2012 World Superbike Results

Spoiler Alert: 2012 World Superbike results from Silverstone listed below

The 2012 World Superbike Championship headed to the UK this weekend for round 10 at Silverstone, a 3.6-mile circuit just south of London where the 2012 Olympics are being held.

And like always, rain was a deciding factor. But it would prove significant for Kawasaki Racing Team's Loris Baz, who won the first race of his career after a confused race-one at Silverstone. Joining Baz on the race-one podium was the BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet duo of Michel Fabrizio and Ayrton Badovini.

In race two, it was the Frenchman Sylvain Guintoli who was victorious. The newly-signed Pata Racing Ducati rider, who also won a race at Assen while competing on the Team Effenbert-Liberty Racing Ducati, was joined on the podium by Baz and former teammate Jakub Smrz, who took the pole at Silverstone.

Following are the highlights of each race:

Silverstone Race 1

Kawasaki Racing team rider Baz won his first SBK race after weather conditions played an ever-changing role in the first 18-lap race of the day. The first attempt to run it was halted after two separate crashes, and the restart was declared wet, but with a mostly dry track surface visible over the length of the circuit.

Light rains came and went as the lead changed a bewildering number of times, but with a few laps to go the rains got even heavier and riders movements forward and back got even more frenzied.

Over the line for the last time, Baz won by 0.383 seconds, with BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet duo Fabrizio and Badovini second and third respectively and Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) was fourth.

As Badovini crossed the line he fell on the edge of the track and the following Rea also crashed into Badovini's machine, but after each had crossed the line. Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) was fifth, but championship leader Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) was a late faller and he no-scored.

Silverstone Race 2

Guintoli was declared the winner of an eight lap second Superbike race after the rains fell so hard that three riders fell on the same part of the track, and the red flag was shown.

Half points were awarded to the top 15 riders. Baz had been in the lead on the lap that the flag was shown but he had fallen shortly before, so on the count back he was credited with second.

Third went to long time second place rider Smrz (Liberty Racing Team Effenbert) with Aprilia Racing rider Eugene Laverty, who was 16 seconds behind rain master Guintoli when the flag went out, fourth.

Maxime Berger (Team Effenbert Liberty Racing Ducati) was fifth, Chaz Davies (ParkinGO MTC Aprilia) was eventually classified seventh, one place behind late crasher Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati). Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) was eighth.

With Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) 11th, the championship table leaving has Biaggi on 274 points, Melandri on 263.5 and Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) on 222.5, two points ahead of Checa.

Rossi to Leave Ducati, Rejoin Yamaha? UPDATED

UPDATE TO STORY BELOW:

It seems Niall Mackenzie's account was hacked and the facts of the story below are a hoax. Clearly Valentino Rossi is still ruminating on his options...and we will have to wait a little longer before we hear the truth.

VR46 MotoGP News

The MotoGP rumor mill continues to spin regarding nine-time World Champion Valentino Rossi's position in 2013 MotoGP.

Following two years of struggles with the Ducati Team, it appears Rossi will return to the Yamaha Factory Team, joining former teammate Jorge Lorenzo.

The speculation arrives after two significant events - current Yamaha Factory Racing's Ben Spies departure from the team at the conclusion of the 2012 season, and former 500cc MotoGP rider Niall MacKenzie tweeting "Done deal! A well-known Italian will definitely be on a blue bike next year, woo hoo!"

MacKenzie's tweet arrived after he allegedly observed Rossi at Yamaha Motor Europe headquarters.

If Rossi fills Spies' vacant seat on the Yamaha YZR-M1, the Italian will return on a bike he helped develop throughout his seven-year tenure with factory Yamaha in the premier class. During that time, Rossi amassed 46 wins and four titles. Conversely, in the past two years with Ducati, Rossi only made it to the podium twice - third at a wet Le Mans in 2011, and second at a wet Le Mans this season.

As for money, various European reports say the Audi AG-owned Ducati offered Rossi a two-year contract of around $40 million to continue on the GP12, though Yamaha will likely offer a much lower amount. Plus, there are rumors that Yamaha won't pay the high-price allegedly wanted by Rossi's crew chief, Jeremy Burgess. But Rossi will likely do whatever it takes to bring Burgess aboard.

And if the rumors are true, Rossi will return with his former rival Lorenzo, who in reports said Rossi needs to be back on a "competitive bike."

Rossi is supposed to make an official announcement before Indianapolis MotoGP (Aug. 17-19), which will certainly be the most covered story in 2012 MotoGP.
